The order matters more than you think.

Welcome back to The Starterpreneur. Last week we talked about starting before you're ready. This week we go deeper — into one of the most powerful shifts in modern entrepreneurship: building your audience first.

Most people build a product, then try to find buyers. Smart starters flip it. They build an audience of people who trust them, then ask that audience what to build. The product almost sells itself.

Audience First, Product Second

An audience is not just a mailing list. It's a group of people who look forward to hearing from you. They know your name. They've read your posts, watched your videos, or been in your WhatsApp group. When you launch something, they give it a shot — not because of a clever ad, but because they already trust you.

Three audience-first platforms to choose from:

  • LinkedIn — best for B2B, professional services, and solopreneurs. Post daily short-form insights. Build in public. Connect with your exact target customer.

  • Instagram / TikTok — best for visual, lifestyle, and consumer products. Document your journey. Show behind-the-scenes. Be consistent over clever.

  • Email newsletter — the most valuable long-term asset. You own the list. No algorithm can take it away. Start one from day one, even with 12 subscribers.

You don't need all three. Pick one and commit for 90 days. Consistency beats quality when you're starting out.

How to grow your first 100 followers without ads:

  • Engage genuinely with 10 accounts in your niche every day for 30 days

  • Post 3–5 times per week — teach something useful, share something real

  • Mention your newsletter or offer in your bio and once a week in your posts

  • DM every new follower with a genuine, non-salesy message

Content Compounding

Write one long-form piece per week (a newsletter issue, a LinkedIn article, a blog post). Then break it into smaller pieces: 3 short LinkedIn posts, 2 Instagram captions, 1 Twitter/X thread, 1 short video. One idea, six pieces of content.

Marketing principle to remember:

You don't need to create more content. You need to get more mileage out of what you already create. Repurpose relentlessly.

Social Media Manager for Local Businesses

Thousands of local businesses — restaurants, salons, gyms, tradespeople — know they need a social media presence but have no time. Offer to run their Instagram for £200–£500/month: one post per day, replies managed, monthly report.

You can manage 5 clients working part-time hours. That's £1,000–£2,500/month in recurring revenue. No office. No staff. Just a phone, Canva, and a spreadsheet.

This week's challenge: Post your first piece of content

Write and publish one post today about a lesson you've learned in business, work, or life. It doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't need to go viral. You just need to start the habit. Comment "#1" on your post to mark it as the beginning. Momentum starts with one.

Until next week,
